Story Behind The Song
The initial trigger for this song was a friend who I could see was jeopardizing the best relationship he had ever had, or was likely to have, largely because he was so self-centered that his main attention was on his needs, and very little on his significant other. He finally recognized his self-inflicted loss, but he had let it go on too long.
Song Description
This is a song about a man who was so self-centered that he constantly took his significant other for granted, marginalized her own legitimate needs, recognizing too late what a treasure he had.

Lyrics
I never saw your heart break
The day you needed me
I was walking down some long, long path
Blind as I could be
Your heart was just a breath away
And I was just too deaf to stay
And hear it shatter
What does it matter now
On the day after, the day you needed me.
All those nights you held my ghost
When you needed someone warm
And all along the way you took
the silence and the storms
You never wanted anything
But arms to hold you and your dreams
And I was like a shadow man
Who never showed his loving hands
Until the day after, the day you needed me
A heart so full of empty
I could have tumbled in
But I was deaf and blind to love
I never could begin
To see how much I needed you
Until the day after, the day you needed me.
Until the day after, the day you needed me.
