Story Behind The Song
I first wrote this piano concerto in honor of my young friend Val Wold who was an 11 year old piano prodigy at the time. After I wrote the concerto, I wrote a fictional screenplay called The Prodigy, based on the musical themes in the concerto. Here is a description of the action based on the themes in the third movement: 3. 3rd movement - Concert Hall - The Prodigy begins to play the 3rd movement of the Piano Concerto.
a. Show quick flashbacks of the four generations,
i. Theme A Russian-American conflict,
ii. Theme B The Romance between the Russian Girl and the American businessman,
iii. Theme C difficulties getting the girl out of the Soviet Union.
iv. Theme D transition merging the two cultures into one identity,
v. Theme E flashbacks to the Russian folk era,
4. The final climax in the US, culminating with the display of the relics of the two World War II soldiers (The 69th Infantry Division Shoulder Patch and the Russian Army belt, how they belong to the one united family.
a. Finally the camera focuses on the prodigy as he reaches the climax of the concerto and the three family members unite. Contact Gary Edwards at gedward@roadrunner.com for sheet music, script and other information.
