Story Behind The Song
Like many people, I spent my summers attending a remote YMCA training school for youth leaders. The idea is to select gifted athletes from among the YMCA's various sports, and train them to become leaders both in their selected sport and their community at large. This YMCA Leaders' School (there are several throughout the U.S.) is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountain Range. I attended this school for several years, and in a sense, grew up with my fellow leaders there. I wrote this song for them.
Song Description
Sometimes life can be hard. Relationships don't always weather the upheavals that can come our way. I wanted the speaker in this song to give reassurances that no matter what kind of hard things might come, they were firm in their conviction to be a reliable source of comfort and hope to their loved one

Lyrics
When The Troubles Get Too Much
Words and Music: Elizabeth Butler
Verse One:
I'm going to cradle you in my arms
'Til your heart slows down its racing.
And I'll soothe away with my kisses
The tracks your tears are tracing.
Refrain:
Sometimes forever can be one night
And mercy doesn't come quite soon enough.
So I will be the air you breathe
When the troubles get too much.
Verse Two:
When sorrow crashes in like the sea
I won't let you wash away from shore.
And I'll gently bathe you with my tears.
When hurt is seeping out from every pore.
Refrain:
Sometimes forever can be one night
And mercy doesn't come quite soon enough.
So I will be the air you breathe
When the troubles get too much.
(repeat refrain)
Verse Three:
When dignity has fallen apart
Leaving only shame as ruins
I will hold a mirror to your heart
And show you all the jewels there.
Refrain:
Sometimes forever can be one night
And mercy doesn't come quite soon enough
So I will be the air you breathe
When the troubles get too much.
