Story Behind The Song
My father was a Scottish coal miner. a heart of gold and hands like shovels, but with a character gentle as a fledgling sparrow.
He is, and will always be, my model of "how a real man should be".
He occasionally journeyed home from the mine to our miner's cottage in Dunfermline on a small coal train, known as The Pug.
That wee steam engine could pull many tons of coal very slowly, or nip along briskly when unloaded.
I wrote this tune while visualizing one of its light days, bouncing along the track, like the little engine that could, and him coming home from a dark, cold and hard shift underground, carrying a smile to light my world.
I dearly miss him, who he was, and what he stood for. We all need folk like him as examples to live like, and lighter days to live them in.
