CHORUS
"I looked at my hands to see," said Harriet, pushin' up her sleeves,
"To see if I was the same...now that I was free.
Such glory over everything, the sun came like gold through trees
And o'er the fields!" she proclaimed with a smile on her face.
The year was 1849 when Harriet Tubman crossed the line
In search of the Underground Railroad, the path to her very own life we're told
Eluded the master standing guard, keeping slaves with disregard
For their feelings or their family ties except when he looked into their eyes
She had to find the ones who would help her to freedom
Harriet hid in houses, barns, cold dark cellars, vegetable carts
She walked through woods and swamps at night, the North Star was her only light
Nineteen times she found her way, fugitives looking for free states
Perilous trips, many close calls, the Southern Militia couldn't catch them all
She promised she would go back for the others
The year was 1860 when Harriet made her last journey
She led people back to life, brought together husband and wife
Brother, sister, her mom and dad, mended families, what they had
After years of slavery tore apart their history
It should have been different
It should have never happened
Chorus
