Story Behind The Song
This song was inspired by a scene in a PBS special on "The Gene: An Intimate History". In the episode, a mother is losing her young daughter to a horrible degenerative, genetic disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and, wanting to be able to halt the progression of the disease and recall some of the recent high points of her daughter's life, says "Why can't time just stop?"

Lyrics
If I could have those moments
The special happy times
When everything important
Got frozen in my mind.
'Cause I'm losing someone dear
Whose life I've nursed so long.
Things are getting worse, it's clear,
Although we did no wrong.
I wish time would stop
And let us all escape
To times back when we thought
That life was simply great.
Remembering what's passed,
I'll focus where I should.
So when the thoughts come back,
Those memories will be good.
If clocks would just stop ticking,
Things would get no worse.
And we could be learning
Just how to end this curse.
Oh, how on earth?
I wish time would stop
And let us all escape
To times back when we thought
That life was simply great.
If I had one more moment
To see their life unfold
I'd stretch it out so very long
Till their whole story was told.
I wish time would stop
And let us all escape
To times back when we thought
That life was simply great.
