Story Behind The Song
Read Luke 15 - the story of the Prodigal Son. I can relate to the son in the story found in the Luke passage.
I'm pretty much a schmuck, having squandered blessings away in my youth in search of something better than what God had already provided. But the happy ending is God loves me no matter what and waiting for me to come home.

Lyrics
Prodigal Son
© David W. Lin, BMI
Disobedient and full of pride
Father God, I've sinned against You
There You are with Your arms opened wide
Despite the things that I put You through
The life You gave me I have squandered
You blessed me richly yet I turned away
Like a lost sheep I just wandered
Can't believe my ears when I hear You say,
[Chorus]
"Welcome home, my prodigal son"
Forgive me Lord for all the things that I've done
I turned my back and I went astray
Now Jesus is the only way
I was dead now I'm alive again
But I'm not worthy to be called Your son
You gave me hope and forgave my sin
Up on the cross where the work was done
I was blinded by greed and fame
Set on living life my own way
Patiently You kept calling out my name
Can't believe my ears when I hear You say
[Chorus 2x]
