The Stone

Story Behind The Song

Vienne is a commune in south-eastern France, located 20 miles (32 km) south of Lyon, on the Rhône River. It is the second largest city after Grenoble in the Isère department, of which it is a subprefecture. The city's population was of 29,400 as of the 2001 census. Before the arrival of the Roman armies, Vienne was the capital city of the Allobroges, a Gaul people. Transformed into a Roman colony in 47 BC under Julius Caesar, Vienne became a major urban center, ideally located along the Rhône river, then a major axis of communication. The town later became a Roman provincial capital. Numerous remains of Roman constructions are still visible in modern Vienne. The town was also an important early bishopric in Christian Gaul. Its most famous bishop was Avitus of Vienne. At the Council of Vienne, convened there in October 1311, Pope Clement V abolished the order of the Knights Templar. During the middle ages, Vienne was part of the kingdom of Provence, dependent on the Holy Roman Empire, while the opposite bank of the Rhône was French territory thus making it a strategic position.

Song Description

This song is about the way the singer felt when he was visiting the ancient town of Vienne, France. He had feelings of Deja Vu and amazement, wondering how they transported and laid the huge stones throughout the narrow winding streets over 3,000 years ago (ancient Rome).

Lyrics

The Stone - James Morris Pearson - Copyright 2009

Verse
The moon escapes, tries to hide, paints her shadow on the wall.
Streets of stone twisting, turning, mystery hides where shadows fall.

Verse
Streetlights in the haze illuminate the night,
enchanting buildings catch the light reflect upon the ancient sight.

Chorus
Who laid the stone here?
Who laid the stone here?
Who laid the stone here?
How many hands, how many years, how many tears?

Verse
Mystery clings to me from places I have known.
History, I can't see the secrets in the stone.

Chorus
Who laid the stone here?
Who laid the stone?
Who laid the stone here?
How many hands how many years, how many tears?

Bridge
Chase the Moon through the streets and watch the shadows fall.
Feel the night against your face,
place your hands on the stone and see if you recall
something familiar in this place?

Verse
Mist clings to every light, footsteps follow me,
understand what we can't see...the shadows are the mystery.

Chorus
Who laid the stone here?
Who laid the stone?
Who laid the stone here?
How many hands, how many years, how many tears?
